“Giving yourself some breathing room…”: an exploration of group meditation for people with aphasia
Aphasiology October 7, 2020 Sweta Panda, A. Whitworth, D. Hersh et al.
People with chronic aphasia who regularly attended a meditation group reported consistent psychosocial benefits, including greater acceptance and resilience after stroke. Individual variation was observed in how participants learned meditation and their preferences for different techniques. Reduced focus on language impairment was a strong motivator for attending the group, alongside benefits of regular practice for self-acceptance, resilience, and a sense of calm. Positive group experience further encouraged regular participation. The study concludes that meditation may offer a complementary approach for living with aphasia, with language rehabilitation remaining an area for future research.
