Psychological Mechanisms Behind Esoteric Practices

July 3, 2026 Indhuja Murugesan, G N P V Babu

The chapter analyzes psychological mechanisms underlying esoteric traditions, integrating research on symbolic cognition, consciousness, and cultural psychology. It explains how symbolism, intuition, and altered states of awareness function as cognitive mechanisms for individual meaning-making and cultural identity. Esoteric disciplines such as meditation, ritual, and divination are interpreted through depth, cognitive, and transpersonal psychology. The authors propose a new integrated model, Psychological Esoteric Dynamics (PED), which accounts for how esoteric practices affect consciousness and contribute to cultural evolution. The chapter argues for the relevance of an interdisciplinary approach to psychology and esotericism in contemporary scientific and cultural studies.
