Phenomenology

Phenomenology is both a philosophical tradition and a qualitative research method that seeks to understand the intrinsic and extrinsic components of an experience or the experience of a phenomenon. This chapter examines its history and key articulators, then provides examples in art education and museums. Featured researcher Kiersten Latham conducts phenomenological studies focusing on museum experience as numinous experiences; in an interview excerpted here, she discusses her methodological approach to art museums.
