Transcendental Meditation for women affected by domestic violence: Study protocol of a pilot randomised, controlled trial.

Integrative Medicine Research December 1, 2020 Matthew J Leach, Heather Lorenzon, Sandy Nidich

A pilot randomized controlled trial will compare Transcendental Meditation (TM) to facilitated group support for women affected by domestic violence in Adelaide, Australia. Over eight weeks, participants will receive either standardized TM training or group support sessions. Outcomes measured at baseline, week 8, and week 16 include health-related quality of life, depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and PTSD symptoms. Previous studies suggest TM improves psychological outcomes in other populations, but its effects on domestic violence survivors are largely unknown. If TM proves beneficial, it could offer an accessible, long-term treatment option for distress, anxiety, and depression related to domestic violence.

Improving the health and well-being of community-dwelling caregivers of dementia sufferers: study protocol of a randomized controlled trial of structured meditation training.

Journal of alternative and complementary medicine (New York, N.Y.) February 1, 2014 Matthew J Leach, Andrew Francis, Tahereh Ziaian

This paper describes the design of a pilot randomized wait-list controlled trial testing whether a 13-hour Transcendental Meditation training program can improve psychological stress, quality of life, affect, and cognitive performance in community-dwelling dementia caregivers in metropolitan Adelaide, South Australia. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks, with results expected in early 2014. The authors contend that if effective, TM could offer a simple, cost-effective strategy to help caregivers cope with the demanding role.
