Language and the World of Mythos: An Investigation on the Archeology of Culture

Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Dergisi July 12, 2018 Kubilay Hoşgör

The author examines Ernst Cassirer's analysis of mythos within his system of symbolic forms, arguing that mythical consciousness influences the emergence of language. Comparing Cassirer with Chomsky, the author contends that Chomsky's theory, which treats language as entirely intrinsic, cannot account for cultural differences because it relies on an anticipation of causality—the assumption that the future will resemble the past. This anticipation, the author argues, leads to the misconception that worldly features are species characteristics. The author proposes that the mind-body problem has an ontological character and that ontological categories from the mythical world produce delusions, as the mythical world is phenomenological.
