Investigation of the effectiveness of a mindfulness intervention with vulnerable young people

May 28, 2026 Anna Abdullahzadeh

A mindfulness-based intervention delivered to vulnerable young people in a special educational setting was well received and associated with reduced stress in some participants. Eight sessions of mindfulness meditation practices and psycho-educational information were provided to a small group. The study used a mixed-methods design with focus groups, parent interviews, and self-report questionnaires completed before and after sessions. Young people whose parents engaged with them in mindfulness showed better outcomes. Not all participants benefited, suggesting that opting in is important. The intervention was relatively short compared to other therapies, making it potentially cost-effective and feasible for clinicians with implementation skills.
