Metamorphoses: Transformation, Meaning, and the via psychedelica

New Directions in Philosophy and Cognitive Science January 1, 2025 Danny Forde

This chapter argues that the psychedelic experience is a transformative experience and one of the most profound avenues for personal and philosophical growth. Drawing on ancient Greek philosophy, Perennialism, and Scheler's philosophical anthropology, the author contends that the psychedelic experience seeks self-identification with the Ground of Being, a unifying source of existential meaning. The exploration reveals that psychedelics, by inducing profound shifts in consciousness, align with philosophical traditions that emphasize direct, experiential engagement with deeper layers of reality.

Prolegomena to a Phenomenology of Psychedelic Experiences

New Directions in Philosophy and Cognitive Science January 1, 2025 Danny Forde

This chapter develops a philosophical foundation for analyzing psychedelic experiences through realist phenomenology, a tradition not yet systematically applied to psychedelic states. The author argues that focusing on the structures of consciousness as altered by psychedelics reveals deeper metaphysical implications without engaging in direct metaphysical speculation. The work contributes a novel approach to the academic study of psychedelic consciousness by examining how these substances modify conscious experience, while acknowledging that such structural shifts point toward broader philosophical questions about reality.
