In Brazil, certain plants, beverages, and religious practices are called jurema. Since the colonial period, ritual use of jurema has been documented among Indigenous peoples in northeastern Brazil. Jurema also appears in new forms within catimbó, a religion derived from those rites, which was incorporated into umbanda in the mid-20th century. Umbanda renewed itself through contact with catimbó, securing a place for juremeiros within it, to the point that a religion known and practiced simply as jurema exists in the region. In these contexts, mystical phenomena are considered related to mysterious forces and enchanted elements.
