BEHAVIORAL ANALYSES OF ANTIDEPRESSANT-LIKE EFFECT OF SEROTONERGIC PSYCHEDELICS IN MICE

Serotonergic psychedelics such as psilocin, DOI, and TCB-2 produce antidepressant-like effects in mice, and these effects depend on the 5-HT2A receptor. Mice given a single dose of these drugs showed less immobility in forced-swim and tail-suspension tests, which was blocked by a 5-HT2A antagonist. Psilocin's effect lasted at least three weeks. However, only psilocin reduced anxiety-like behavior in the novelty-suppressed feeding test, and this effect was not blocked by the 5-HT2A antagonist. The drugs did not affect spontaneous movement or head-twitch responses. In mice exposed to chronic stress or corticosterone, a single dose of DOI reversed depression-like behavior.
