Stepping Away from Sensory Deprivation: An Analysis of Floatation-REST Research

Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulus Technique/Therapy), a mild form of sensory deprivation in which a participant floats in saltwater heated to skin temperature (35.5-36℃) in a dark, silent tank, is growing more popular for relaxation and stress reduction. Many studies show it benefits anxiety, chronic pain, and conditions associated with stress and muscle tension. However, stigma linked to the term 'sensory deprivation' deters people who could benefit, especially those with severe anxieties. The technique should be de-stigmatized and presented as an accessible option.
