When words and pictures come alive: Relating the modality of intrusive thoughts to modalities of hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations

October 1, 2011 S. McCarthy-Jones, Laura Barnes, G. Hill et al.

Hallucinations that occur when falling asleep (hypnagogic) or waking up (hypnopompic) are linked to intrusive thoughts. In a student sample, auditory hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations were predicted only by intrusive auditory imagery, while felt-presence experiences were predicted only by intrusive visual imagery. These relationships held after controlling for age, gender, depression, anxiety, and thought suppression. The Durham Hypnagogic and Hypnopompic Hallucinations Questionnaire showed good reliability for its auditory and felt-presence subscales but not for the visual subscale.
