Sleep Spindle Architecture and Bilateral Cessation Events During High-Amplitude Sexual Arousal States: A Longitudinal Consumer EEG Case Study

A 57-year-old man with no meditation training showed brainwave patterns during sexual arousal that resemble those seen in advanced meditators. Using a consumer EEG headset, researchers detected spindle-band activity (11–15 Hz) during high-arousal states and quiet rest. In one session, directed attention reduced spindle density by 89%. They also observed moments when alpha and beta brainwaves dropped to near-zero across all channels, and a 'hover phase' where the subject appeared to voluntarily maintain brainwave activity just above that threshold. The subject's resting brain activity was reorganized, with eyes-open and eyes-closed alpha power being equal and spindles appearing before eye closure. These findings suggest altered thalamic gating, possibly from a prior near-death experience, but require replication with clinical equipment.
