Lucid dreaming in fiction writing: An 8-week experiment

University Library Heidelberg August 13, 2025 Laura Roklicer

Lucid dreaming can be used as a tool for fiction writing. Over an 8-week intervention, 29 writers with varied lucid dreaming experience received induction training and drew on lucid, non-lucid, and hypnagogic/hypnopompic dreams to produce a short story. Blind ratings of pre- and post-intervention stories across five creativity domains (plot, character, setting, emotion, symbolism) showed no statistically significant improvement, though mean scores increased in all categories.

Lucid and Liminal Dreaming for Creative Writing: Interdisciplinary Investigations and Experiments

January 1, 2025 Laura Roklicer

Dreams—both non-lucid and lucid—can serve as a cognitive tool for creative writing, enabling unique associative thinking that generates ideas and solves problems. Four studies examined this: reanalysis of interviews with 26 writers showed non-lucid dreams aid idea generation and problem-solving; unstructured interviews with 26 writers explored liminal and lucid dreaming benefits; an 8-week online intervention with 29 fiction writers compared stories before and after dream-induction techniques, focusing on symbolism, emotion, worldbuilding, character, and plot; a 6-week in-person intervention with 16 poets, including sleep lab experiments, examined liminal, lucid, and non-lucid dreams, N1 hypnagogic experiences, and targeted dream incubation on poetic creativity. Findings support dreams as a cognitive tool for creative writing.
