A self-transcendence enhancement program given twice a week for six weeks to hospitalized patients with drug addiction led to significant improvements in self-transcendence and declines in depression compared to a control group. Qualitative interviews with 12 participants identified three themes of change: looking back at oneself, gaining confidence through small changes, and finding meaning in life. The program may be useful as a nursing intervention for drug addiction patients.
