A new method enables bidirectional communication with people experiencing lucid dreams. Researchers presented arithmetic problems via audio playback to sleeping subjects, who answered using pre-arranged breathing or eye-movement signals. Pilot experiments showed that subjects could understand instructions, perform mental calculations, and respond without waking, demonstrating conscious processing of external auditory stimuli during lucid dreams. This is the first reported method for two-way dialogue with a lucid dreamer, expanding possibilities for objective study of this altered state. A remote version using smartphone sensors is under development to allow home-based participation by lucid dreaming enthusiasts.
