Review of Substance-Related Dreams through Typical Dreams

Drug-related dreams during withdrawal or recovery are thought to reflect attempts to fulfill drug-use desires, but the literature lacks an explanation of how and why these dreams gratify cravings to varying degrees. This paper argues that the presumed alleviation of drug desire from such dreams has been inferred from prognostic findings and abstinence periods, not directly explained. The authors note a similarity between drug-related dreams and failure-related examination dreams. Instead of assuming different dreams provide different satisfaction levels, examining them through Freud's censorship mechanism may reveal they fulfill distinct desires. The paper analyzes substance-related and typical dreams using neuroscientific evidence and Freudian, Jungian, and Kohutian perspectives.
