Home in the Body
Jung Journal October 2, 2025 R. Greenberg
Barbara Holifield argues that depth psychology must attend to the body as much as to words, integrating Jungian and somatic traditions to address trauma and development. She introduces Donald Kalsched's concept of the archetypal self-care system into the body, showing how early defenses manifest in musculature, posture, and breath. The therapeutic relationship becomes a container for unmetabolized emotional pain. Holifield draws on clinical, contemplative, and personal experience, weaving trauma theory, developmental research, and embodied presence to guide clinicians toward listening to interoceptive experience as a path to nature, soul, and belonging.
