Self-transcendence, self-distancing, and family functioning together explain 37% of the capacity for self-care among Mexican older adults. In a sample of 253 elderly participants (mean age 68 years, 60% female, 51% with primary education or less), those with chronic diseases showed lower self-distancing but greater self-transcendence and self-care ability compared to those without chronic conditions. The findings suggest that psychological and family factors are important contributors to self-care in aging populations, which could inform nursing interventions aimed at preventing functional, cognitive, and social decline.
