Breath psychotherapy uses the breath directly for healing, encompassing methods from basic relaxation and imagery to advanced meditation and spiritual exercises. This approach has been central to many traditions—including Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, and Islam—which view breath as linking body, mind, and spirit. The article presents an appreciative inquiry into modern forms of breath psychotherapy, arguing that these practices derive from a perennial psychology that recognizes a pre-reflective unity underlying diverse healing traditions. Breath psychotherapy aims to heal the total psyche in its original, holistic sense.
