Death, once defined simply by the cessation of breathing and heartbeat, is now also determined by the loss of brain stem function, which implies the cessation of consciousness. However, some individuals declared dead later return to life, a phenomenon known in psychology as a Near Death Experience (NDE). Those who undergo NDEs report feeling a series of very real events and can recount what they experienced during their apparent death. Many describe encountering a very soft light, which some attribute to God. These experiences suggest that humans can encounter transpersonal events that transcend ordinary reality.
