Playing through the video game Alan Wake can be understood as an individuation process, the Jungian path toward self-realization. The protagonist, a writer suffering from writer's block, enters a nightmare after his wife disappears. In that dream world he encounters archetypal figures—the Hero, the Shadow, the Anima—drawn from the collective unconscious. These figures, such as Thomas Zane and Barbara Jagger, guide him to confront darkness and integrate opposing forces. Finishing the manuscript "Departure" represents Alan's achievement of self-realization, completing his individuation journey.
