Religious experience and public cult: The case of Mary Ann Van Hoof.

The first year (1950) of the Virgin Mary apparitions reported by Mary Ann Van Hoof of Necedah, Wisconsin, served not only the broader community but also helped the seer find meaning in an emotionally deprived and abusive childhood. Public serial apparitions are complex events that should be examined for how a seer's personal characteristics and experiences interact with the public events that form around those experiences.
