Ma’rifatullah of Ibn ‘Ata’illah in the Face of ‘The Peak Experience’ of Abraham Maslow

Jurnal Akidah & Pemikiran Islam June 30, 2024 Nur Hadi Ihsan, Moh. Isom Mudin, Abdul Rohman

Achieving life's principal goal brings happiness and a unique psychological state. In Sufism, the ultimate aim is ma‘rifatullah (knowledge of God), while Western psychology describes a comparable 'peak experience' (Abraham Maslow). This paper compares the two concepts using a descriptive, content-analytic comparative method and documentary data. Both involve an ecstatic condition, but their foundations differ fundamentally: ma‘rifatullah arises from a revelation-based Islamic worldview, whereas the peak experience is rooted in Western secular humanism.
