Shared and connection-specific intrinsic interactions in the default mode network

Neuroimage October 1, 2019 Jessica Samogin, Quanying Liu, M. Marino et al.

Alpha rhythm (8-13 Hz) supports connectivity across all regions of the default mode network (DMN), while beta (13-30 Hz) and gamma (30-80 Hz) rhythms support connectivity between specific DMN node pairs. Analysis of high-density electroencephalographic data from 19 healthy volunteers at rest showed that frequency-dependent functional interactions between four main DMN nodes peaked at 9-11 Hz, with additional higher-frequency peaks varying by connection. These findings suggest that different neuronal oscillations play distinct roles in supporting DMN connectivity, with frequency-dependent analysis offering a tool for understanding brain network interactions.
