Investigation of Default Mode Network by very low frequency EEG network analysis
Functional connectivity in the default mode network (DMN) is higher in the very low-frequency band (0.01–0.1 Hz) during eye-closed resting than during mental arithmetic, as measured by EEG phase locking values. Specifically, connectivity between frontal and posterior regions was 0.062 higher during rest. In the theta band, connectivity between occipital and right temporal regions was 0.051 higher during mental arithmetic. These results suggest that EEG can capture DMN activity in the ultra-low frequency range, similar to fMRI and intracranial EEG, potentially aiding study of depression and dementia.
