DIGITAL MICRO-BOREDOM AND THE EROSION OF SUBCONSCIOUS COGNITION

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research) July 18, 2026 Madina Rafiqova

Modern smartphones have eliminated brief empty intervals of daily life, a phenomenon termed 'micro-boredom.' These transient periods of understimulation serve crucial cognitive functions. The habitual replacement of micro-boredom with digital micro-stimuli disrupts neural networks essential for self-reflection and creativity, specifically suppressing the brain's Default Mode Network and downregulating the dopaminergic reward system. Eradicating these quiet gaps fragments attention and stifles cognitive incubation needed for deep problem-solving. The paper argues for preserving unstructured pauses as a vital physiological buffer in a hyper-connected world.
