“Who is Buddha? I am Buddha.”—The motivations and experiences of Chinese young adults attending a Zen meditation camp in Taiwan

August 7, 2020 Yang-seop Song, Libo Yan

Chinese young adults without a religious belief participate in a Zen meditation camp for three types of reasons: self-motivation, pressure from family, or to accompany friends. During the camp, they report three kinds of inner experiences: feelings, enlightenment or transformation, and heightened sensory awareness. The findings suggest that nonreligious people can seek and obtain spiritual experiences through religious tourism events.
