Existential Buddhism: embracing life's uncertainties and finding meaning within

South Florida Journal of Development October 25, 2024 Buthkande Amathabhani, Nilantha Dissanayake 2 citations

Buddhists seek Nirvana to escape the cycle of suffering and find solace, according to an analysis of early Buddhist scriptures and existential philosophy. The study examines whether Buddhism can harmonize with existentialism, a philosophy emphasizing individual experience, freedom, and responsibility. By critically reviewing writings of Buddhist scholars and existential philosophers, the analysis reveals that juxtaposing Buddhism and existentialism offers a fresh perspective highlighting individual autonomy and choice in confronting life's complexities. The research deepens understanding of how mindfulness and meditation connect to core Buddhist principles, fostering more authentic engagement with practices and enriching personal well-being. It challenges conventional perceptions of Buddhism and elucidates potential alignments with existential thought.
