Cuerpo, espacio y ritual

Anthropologica December 15, 2025 Daniela Mesa Sánchez

An ethnographic analysis of Vipassana meditation in Argentina, based on fieldwork at the Dhamma Sukhada center in Brandsen, Buenos Aires Province. Through participant observation during a ten-day silent retreat, the study explores the ritualistic, performative, and experiential elements of this practice within the Theravada Buddhist tradition founded by S. N. Goenka. It examines contemporary transformations in religiosity, subjectivity, and ritual as Vipassana expands globally into non-Asian contexts. The retreat experience fosters specific forms of subjectivation at the intersection of non-hegemonic religiosities, contemporary spiritualities, and multiple modernities.
