A qualitative study of mindfulness-based meditation therapy in Japanese cancer patients.

Supportive care in cancer : official journal of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer July 1, 2011 Michiyo Ando, Tatsuya Morita, Tatsuo Akechi et al.

Mindfulness-based meditation therapy, including breathing, yoga movement, and meditation, may help cancer patients develop adapted coping and positive recognition. In a qualitative study of 28 patients undergoing anti-cancer treatment, participants attended two therapy sessions and practiced at home with a CD for two weeks. Pre-intervention, patients often chose themes like "Effort to cope" and "Suffering"; post-intervention, themes shifted toward "Adapted coping" and "Positive meaning." Japanese patients showed some commonalities and differences in theme selection compared with Western patients in other studies.
