Effects of Tummo Meditation and Niguma Yoga on Brain Activity.

Hawai'i journal of health & social welfare September 1, 2025 Ira D Zunin, Alexander J Ring, Audrey M Sakamoto et al.

An increase in alpha band power and intra-connectivity was observed immediately after a session of Tummo meditation combined with Niguma yoga in a seasoned Vajrayana practitioner, as measured by quantitative electroencephalogram imaging and spectral analysis. This suggests increased activation of the default mode network, a brain network involved in internalized cognition, self-reflection, emotional regulation, and creativity. These findings provide neurological evidence for the mental and cognitive benefits of these ancient Himalayan practices, which were previously only practiced by Vajrayana monks during a 3-year retreat. The authors suggest the practices may be validated as effective health interventions and may benefit behavioral health, particularly for minority populations like Native Hawaiians.
