Mindfulness-based neurofeedback: A systematic review of EEG and fMRI studies

A systematic review of EEG and fMRI studies that combine mindfulness meditation with neurofeedback (mbNF) found that fMRI studies primarily target downregulation of the default-mode network (DMN). Although some studies report decreases in DMN activation during neurofeedback, there is insufficient evidence for lasting transfer effects, and most studies lacked adequate control conditions such as sham neurofeedback, so DMN decreases may reflect general task-related deactivation rather than a specific effect of mbNF. EEG studies most consistently show modulation of theta band activity. Both EEG and fMRI mbNF have been implemented with high fidelity in clinical populations, but mental health benefits have not been established. The review recommends sham-controlled randomized trials and clearer reporting.

Source-space EEG neurofeedback links subjective experience with brain activity during effortless awareness meditation

In both novice and experienced meditators, decreased activity in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) corresponded with the subjective experience of effortless awareness during meditation. Participants could volitionally control the PCC signal in the direction associated with that state. Novice meditators achieved the target state a median of 77.97% of the time, and experienced meditators a median of 89.83% of the time. Median confidence ratings linking PCC activity to effortless awareness were 8 out of 10 for novices and 9 for experienced meditators. The findings suggest EEG neurofeedback from the PCC could serve as a tool for meditation training.
