An integrated information theory index using multichannel EEG for evaluating various states of consciousness under anesthesia

Comput. Biol. Medicine December 1, 2022 Kangli Dong, Delin Zhang, Qishun Wei et al.

A new electroencephalogram-based index called ΦEEG, derived from integrated information theory, was tested in two anesthesia databases (propofol, n=20; sevoflurane, n=15). Under sevoflurane, ΦEEG in all frequency bands showed a negative correlation with end-tidal sevoflurane concentration. Under propofol, drowsy participants in moderate sedation had decreased alpha-band ΦEEG compared with baseline, while responsive participants showed no significant difference. The findings suggest alpha-band ΦEEG may help distinguish consciousness from unconsciousness during anesthesia, potentially offering a more direct measure of anesthetic depth than existing indices like the bispectral index.
