On consciousness, resting state fMRI, and neurodynamics.

Nonlinear biomedical physics June 3, 2010 Arvid Lundervold

A pluralistic approach to consciousness connects philosophy of mind (emergentism and global workspace theory), functional neuroimaging, and neurodynamics (Wilson-Cowan model and stochastic resonance). The authors argue that studying large-scale neuronal processes—activity fluctuations and state transitions—in the living human brain during resting-state fMRI can deepen understanding of graded consciousness in clinical settings and clarify the concept of consciousness in neurocognitive and neurophilosophy research.
