Cannabis, Psychosis, and Mortality: A Cohort Study of 50,373 Swedish Men.

Heavy cannabis use at age 18-19 is linked to a 40% higher risk of death up to around age 60, compared with nonuse. People with psychotic disorders have about a 3.7-3.8 times higher risk of death regardless of whether they used cannabis. There is no combined effect: cannabis use does not further raise mortality risk in those with psychosis. The findings come from a longitudinal study of 50,373 Swedish male conscripts followed for about 40 years. Results are cautious because the study lacked information on later-life confounders.
