Inducible Nitric Oxide Inhibitors Block NMDA Antagonist-Stimulated Motoric Behaviors and Medial Prefrontal Cortical Glutamate Efflux.

Frontiers in Pharmacology 2015 Hadley C Bergstrom, Altaf S Darvesh, S P Berger

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a critical role in the motoric and glutamate releasing action of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-antagonist stimulants. Earlier studies utilized neuronal nitric oxide synthase inhibitors (nNOS) for studying the neurobehavioral effects of non-competitive NMDA-antagonist stimulants such as dizocilpine (MK-801) and phencyclidine (PCP). This study explores the role of the...

Activation of 5-HT2 receptors induces glycogenolysis in the rat brain.

European Journal of Pharmacology March 19, 2003 Altaf S Darvesh, Gary A. Gudelsky

The effect of 5-HT(2) receptor activation on brain glycogen and the extracellular concentration of glucose was investigated in the present study. An injection of 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodophenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOI) (2 mg/kg, i.p.) or mescaline (10 mg/kg, i.p.) at an ambient temperature of 29 degrees C produced a 35-45% decrease in brain glycogen that persisted for at least 2 h.
