The endocannabinoid system functions as a neuromodulator that interacts with other neuromodulators, including opioids, and influences all vital body functions, setting the tone of conscious thought and feeling. It operates mostly below conscious awareness but occasionally surfaces into consciousness, where it is experienced as perfect bliss and pain-free calm.
