A 16-week program of breathing exercises, physical postures, and meditation, taught three times a week, led to greater relaxation, a more positive attitude, and better exercise tolerance in adults with asthma compared to a control group. There was a trend toward less use of rescue inhalers among those who practiced yoga. However, lung function measurements did not differ significantly between the yoga and control groups. The findings suggest yoga techniques can be a helpful addition to standard medical care for asthma.
