Abstract
This thesis proposes a unified framework integrating five levels of human cognition and perception into a single coherent architecture. It begins where the reader already lives, with the fast and slow processing systems familiar from Kahneman’s dual-process account, and shows that the ego is not a further component of that architecture but the experiential view generated by the sustained conflict between the two systems, a phantom coherence real in its effects but not real as an entity. It then descends beneath the processing systems to the distributed sub-perceptual Gestalt Sensing System, a whole-organism environmental radar grounded in documented biological substrates including neuroception, the enteric nervous system, sub-threshold chemosensation, infrasound sensitivity, and magnetoreception. It re-conceives consciousness as the organismic ground state, the continuous process by which the organism draws a boundary between self and environment. And it names, for the first time in explicit architectural terms, the layer that emerges when System 1 integrates Gestalt output into coherent pattern before language operates on the result: the Selbstgestalt, the felt shape of the self, the architectural layer that cultures across history have named soul, spirit, conscience, or higher self.
