Consciousness research has fallen into a geocentric structure in which each theory places its chosen property at the center and builds experiments, measurements, formal models, and classifications around it. If integration is placed at the center, systems possessing integration are classified as conscious. If global availability is placed at the center, systems possessing global availability are classified as conscious. The same pattern applies to recurrence, higher-order representation, prediction, embodiment, biological organization, and computation. Each theory refines its starting point and then reuses that refined starting point as a criterion of consciousness. The conclusion circles back to the premise. This circularity creates the deepest blind spot in consciousness research. The field constructs increasingly sophisticated theories while leaving the foundation beneath them unsettled. Measurement becomes more precise. Neural correlations accumulate. Mathematical models grow more elaborate. Predictive power improves. Yet the first question remains untouched: is the selected center necessary for consciousness to occur? Integration, recurrence, broadcasting, representation, prediction, memory, report, and action may accompany consciousness, modulate its contents, and support its functions.
