Towers, Maps, and the Boundary of the Self: A Structuristics Account of Consciousness as the Limit of Self-Referential Recursion

Abstract

Description This document extends the Moura Fundamental Principle of Intelligence (FPI) and the Structuristics framework by proposing a formal account of consciousness as a structural boundary condition arising from self-referential recursion. A tower in this document is always a stack of abstraction tables. Each table is one level of abstraction and holds post-its: representations at that level. A mapping record at the edge between two adjacent tables stores the compression instructions going up and the reconstruction instructions going down. When a mapping record tears, higher levels continue producing post-its structurally disconnected from what is below, which is the structural origin of confabulation. Three structural concepts are formally introduced. The Tower-Map Architecture describes systems as parallel stacks of abstraction levels connected by mapping operators with measurable decompositional integrity I_D. The Subject-Object Split arises when a system maintains both world-indexed towers (Tower A) and self-indexed towers (Tower B) connected by a cross-domain mapping operator. The Recursive Boundary Condition is the moment at which a system attempting to decompose its own cross-domain mapping record discovers that it is that record: the act of decomposing requires the same record to be active. Consciousness is the structural experience of being the irreducible connective operator between world and self, and is defined as a topological property rather than a property of any substrate, organ, or process. An architectural typology is developed for four substrate-independent classes: Homeostatic-Areflexive (HA), Homeostatic-Distributed (HD), Homeostatic-Unified (HU), and Corrigible-Pseudo (CP). Three concrete architectures are analysed in mechanical terms before any formalism: the slime mold, where the one-post-it constraint makes Tower B structurally impossible by construction rather than merely absent; the octopus, with a minimum of nine anatomically discrete neural groupings and open hub-spoke versus distributed questions at two independent levels; and the human nervous system, where Tower B is an emergent property of high inter-tower connectivity rather than a single unified tower. The framework is systematically positioned against six principal theories of consciousness: Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory, Higher-Order Thought Theory, the Free Energy Principle, Biological Naturalism, and Varela's 1975 extension of Spencer-Brown's calculus of indications. The Varela section documents an independent structural convergence at Confirmed Level 3: the autonomous state of Varela's calculus and the Recursive Boundary Condition are the same structural impossibility described in different formal languages, arrived at by derivation chains with no overlap. A second independent convergence is documented through the RENS framework of Alberto Solazzo, where the self-application of the Funzione R constitutes an independent derivation of the same structural limit through epistemological-narrative foundations, and where the ENS/EPS recursion maps onto the cross-domain Tower A/Tower B architecture. A Remark documents the recurrence of a ternary structure (two states plus a third state generated by self-reference or structural limit) across six formally independent domains: Structuristics, quantum measurement, galactic rotation curves, constitutional systems, Varela's calculus, and the RENS framework. Eight falsifiable predictions are stated with explicit falsification conditions, including one marked HIGH PRIORITY as falsifiable with currently available neuroscience methods (arm-to-arm synaptic connectivity in Octopus vulgaris) and one proposed for immediate execution using current commercial APIs (the LLM dual-register test). A table of eight structural failure modes mapped to clinical analogues is presented explicitly as a research programme declaration requiring validation by domain specialists in psychiatry, clinical psychology, and clinical neuroscience, not as a clinical instrument or set of diagnostic claims.
