Abstract
Benoit Mandelbrot demonstrated mathematically that the apparent smoothness of natural forms often conceals structured roughness that persists across every scale of observation. Coastlines, markets, clouds, and turbulence do not become simple when examined more closely; they disclose further differentiation without end. This raises a question that fractal geometry poses but does not answer: why does reality nevertheless appear intelligible, workable, and even smooth to finite, embodied beings? This paper generalizes Mandelbrot's insight into a philosophical theory of understanding. It argues that understanding is not the construction of complete representations of reality but the establishment and continual revision of resolutions: temporary organizations of distinctions through which embodied agents render reality sufficiently intelligible for meaningful engagement. The paper defines resolution rigorously and argues for its irreducibility to abstraction, scale, perspective, framing, granularity, and level of analysis, which it integrates rather than replaces. Five axioms are proposed, from which a Resolution Principle is derived: every act of understanding establishes a resolution that differentiates reality sufficiently for meaningful engagement while preserving the possibility of further differentiation. On this account, resolution produces determinacy for action, and smoothness is the phenomenological appearance of adequate determinacy, while roughness is the disclosure that a resolution has ceased to be adequate. The theory integrates, rather than chooses among, realism, constructivism, pragmatism, and phenomenology, and it distinguishes knowledge, understanding, and wisdom as the storage, establishment, and timely revision of resolutions. Illustrations from cartography, classical mechanics, surgery, artificial intelligence, and contemplative practice are developed, and conditions under which the theory would fail are stated explicitly.
