Summary

AI-generated from the abstract

This paper proposes a theoretical hypothesis that transferring psychophysiological examination from awake individuals to the stage of deep non-rapid eye movement sleep changes not the technical characteristics of the polygraph but the object of observation. Conventional polygraph testing reflects physiological manifestations of the socially constituted personality, whereas recordings during deep dreamless sleep may provide access to more fundamental levels of human existence independent of conscious self-representation. The article outlines a research program for a new interdisciplinary field termed ontological psychophysiology, integrating sleep science, psychophysiology, neuroscience, and philosophical anthropology. The authors argue that this conceptual shift may redefine the polygraph from a detector of emotional conflict to a potential instrument for studying the ontological foundations of the human being, presenting this as a theoretical hypothesis requiring rigorous experimental verification.

Abstract

The polygraph has traditionally been regarded as an instrument for recording physiological responses associated with emotionally significant stimuli in awake individuals. Despite decades of practical application, the conceptual framework of polygraph examinations has remained virtually unchanged, assuming that the object of investigation is always the waking personality. This paper proposes an alternative research perspective. It advances the hypothesis that transferring psychophysiological examination to the stage of deep non-rapid eye movement sleep fundamentally changes not the technical characteristics of the device but the very object of observation. Whereas conventional polygraph testing reflects physiological manifestations of the socially constituted personality, recordings obtained during deep dreamless sleep may provide access to more fundamental levels of human existence that are relatively independent of conscious self-representation. On this basis, the article outlines a research program for a new interdisciplinary field termed ontological psychophysiology, aimed at investigating physiological correlates of deep states of consciousness and human existence. Integrating contemporary sleep science, psychophysiology, neuroscience, and philosophical anthropology, the paper argues that this conceptual shift may redefine the scientific role of the polygraph—from a detector of emotional conflict to a potential instrument for studying the ontological foundations of the human being. The proposed approach is presented as a theoretical hypothesis requiring rigorous experimental verification.
