Awe as Ground State Expansion: Vastness as Positive Displacement, Self-Transcendence as S⁰ Redefinition, and the Geometry of Wonder

Abstract

We apply the Displacement Framework to awe and wonder, identifying awe as the exception that proves the rule: a positive displacement that expands the ground state rather than depleting it. After awe, S0_new contains S0_old (the ground state has grown). Seven formal propositions plus the Accommodation Theorem and Awe Paradox are derived. The Accommodation Theorem formalizes Piaget's accommodation — awe forces schema update so S0 is restructured to include the vast thing; the system returns to a larger ground state. The Awe Paradox shows D(xi_awe) > 0 during the experience but accumulated displacement Phi decreases afterward because S0 expands to accommodate the vastness. The self-diminishment (small self) in awe is formalized as S0 boundary dissolution — not degradation but de-centering. All eight awe elicitors (nature, art, music, moral beauty, big ideas, birth/death, spiritual, near-death) are analyzed as different vastness encounter types. Physiological signature: goosebombs (piloerection), vagal tone increase, cortisol reduction, inflammatory cytokine reduction (Stellar 2015) distinguishing awe from threat-displacement. Moral beauty and elevation (Haidt) are formalized as ethical S0 expansion. Psychedelic ego dissolution is analyzed as extreme awe — complete S0 boundary dissolution. Manufactured awe (advertising, nationalism, celebrity worship) is identified as wrong attractor mimicry without genuine S0 expansion. 31 citations including Keltner, Haidt, Stellar, Shiota, Piff, Frankl, Maslow, James, Burke, Kant, Piaget, Carhart-Harris, and Griffiths.
