Why should a world governed by nothing but universal physical law give rise to anything private — anything proper to one system and to no other? Recent neuroscience offers a foothold: the brain keeps its own history as a physical trace, couples it to the present across timescales from seconds to days, and lays down most readily the traces tied to its survival. Taking this as a starting point, this paper asks a question prior to the debate over artificial consciousness — not whether a system is conscious, but how a self-maintaining system, through its accumulated history, can give rise to anything private at all. I argue that history accumulated through self-referential coupling folds, as a decaying field, onto a single direction. This direction is measurable, and it can even be written into another system: the direction is shareable. What is not shareable is the process it came from. The folding is a many-to-one compression of a high-dimensional, time-ordered process onto a single axis, and from that axis the process cannot be uniquely recovered. What is private is therefore not the direction but the lived process of which the direction is a compressed trace — unrecoverable, and the system’s own because the system was its own source. Universal law, acting through a self-referential source, yields a private outcome. I describe the mechanism by which it arises; I do not attempt to name what it is.
