LIVED EXPERIENCES OF MUSLIM WOMEN IN AFRICA : SPIRITUALITY AS PARTICIPATION IN SPIRIT POSSESSION SEANCES

African feminism and African feminist theology provide popular theoretical frameworks for analyzing the life experiences and spirituality of African women in diverse contexts. This paper uses these two frameworks to examine the spirituality of African Muslim women, specifically describing how spirituality is expressed through the lived experiences of African Muslim women who participate in spirit possession seances in local African contexts. Both primary and secondary data are used to describe the spiritual experiences of Muslim women, analyzed through African feminist and African feminist theological lenses. The paper then suggests Christian responses to the spirituality of African Muslim women, whose worldview is deeply influenced by a syncretism of Islam and indigenous religions.

Abstract

아프리카 여성주의와 아프리카 여성주의 신학은 다양한 맥락 속 아프리카 여성들의 삶의 경험과 영성을 분석하는 대중적인 이론적 틀이 된다. 본 논문은 이 두 가지 이론적 틀을 사용하여 아프리카 무슬림 여성들의 영성을 고찰하는 것을 목표로 한다. 구체적으로, 아프리카 현지 맥락에서 “강신제” (spirit possession seances)에 참여하는 아프리카 무슬림 여성들의 삶의 경험을 통해 영성이 어떻게 표현되는지 서술한다. 무슬림 여성들의 영적 경험을 기술하기 위해 1차 및 2차 데이터가 모두 사용되었으며, 이 데이터들을 아프리카여성주의와 아프리카 여성주의 신학적 틀을 사용하여 분석한다. 이를 통하여 이슬람과 토착 종교가 습합된 영적 세계관에 깊은 영향을 받는 아프리카 무슬림 여성들의 영성에 대한 기독교적 대응 방안을 제언한다.
