Implementation of a multimodal pain protocol in adult burn patients.

Implementing a multimodal pain order set in the electronic medical record for burn patients reduced opioid use without worsening pain. At a single verified burn center, the post-implementation group received significantly lower cumulative median morphine milligram equivalents (97 versus 172) over the first seven days. Use of scheduled non-opioid pain medications—acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and ketamine—increased significantly. The findings suggest that integrating a standardized multimodal order set is an effective method to align clinical practice with American Burn Association guidelines and increase non-opioid analgesic use for acute burn pain.
