The Role of Rajyoga Meditation for Modulation of Anxiety and Serum Cortisol in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Control Study

Annals of Cardiac Anaesthesia April 1, 2017 U. Kiran, Suruchi Ladha, N. Makhija et al.

Rajyoga meditation, a mind-body intervention taught by the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, reduced postoperative anxiety and favorably modulated serum cortisol levels in patients undergoing elective coronary artery bypass surgery. In a randomized controlled trial with 150 patients, those who practiced Rajyoga meditation had significantly lower anxiety scores on the second and fifth postoperative days compared with controls (3.12 vs. 6.12 and 0.69 vs. 5.6, respectively). Cortisol levels were also favorably affected. The intervention involves no rituals or mantras and can be practiced anywhere at any time.
