Analysis of a dream series by the Dream Coding System developed by Ulrich Moser

Research in psychotherapy August 12, 2021 G. Pap, Fritz Lackinger, G. Kamp et al.

A theory-based content analysis of dreams reported during psychodynamic psychotherapy, using the Moser and Hortig dream coding method, reveals changes in the patient's inner psychic process. The manifest dream content, analyzed as a series, showed an initial dominance of the safety principle, followed by increased involvement, more flexible use of dream elements, and more mixed interactions, before returning to themes similar to the initial dream. The coding indicates that the patient improved her ability to regulate affect and increased self-efficacy through better containment of dysfunctional affects. This approach provides an empirical method for assessing therapeutic change in single case studies.
