Self-Transcendence as a Mediator of the Relationship Between Reminiscence Functions and Death Anxiety: Implications for Psychiatric Nurses

Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association May 19, 2023 Abdallah F Abu Khait, Austin Menger, H. Al-Modallal et al.

Reminiscence functions, particularly 'Bitterness Revival,' along with gender, life-threatening disease, history of psychiatric disorder, and work sector, predict death anxiety in Jordanian older adults. Self-transcendence partially mediates the link between Bitterness Revival and death anxiety, suggesting it buffers the effect. The model explains 24% of death anxiety variance. Reminiscence functions also predict self-transcendence, accounting for 25% of its variance. Findings inform psychiatric nursing interventions targeting self-transcendence to reduce death anxiety.
